March 21 – Mark 15:1-15
Andy Wahl
Top government officials having secret meetings behind closed doors, deciding the fate of our world as we know it. Individuals that are wrongly persecuted for nothing more than speaking truths that do not align with the majorities preconceived opinions and misconstrued view of the facts. Mobs of people (most today are courageous keyboard warriors) calling for physical harm even death to all that oppose their twisted views of what is right. The voices of those hiding behind a veil of lies, scream oral hatred until those in charge give into their demands and let the unlawful go but keep the those under the law in harm’s way. The voice of reason falling on one individual with a swaying moral compass “Do I uphold the written law, or do I listen to the cry of the masses?”
What if I told you that history tends to repeat itself, would you believe me? The events above: do they sound familiar? They take place this very day and age which is heavy on the heart, but if we look to His written Word in the book of Mark we find these same events also took place between 50-70 A.D. in the trial of God’s only son, and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
High priests and councils who had their own agendas, having early morning closed-door meetings as to not draw attention. They conceived a laundry list of charges, for which Jesus was sure to be found guilty, but they had to prove their case to the authority of the Romans—Pontius Pilate. Pilate who did not have to heed to the Jewish law, decided the fate of our Lord. In the interim, the high priests and council roused the people gathered round, following the Roman tradition of letting a prisoner go, in this case a killer known by the name of Barabbas. They chose to release a known killer over Jesus, who did nothing more than preform miracles and preach the true Word. Their voices and cries getting ever louder, started to sway Pilate, who did not want any rioting on his watch. The voices called out for the crucifixion of an innocent man, and sadly Pilate gave in to the mob’s demands.
We are bombarded with information, but we must decide what is fact and what is opinion. Jesus did not deny His accusers, but chose to be silent. Jesus could have intervened, but chose not to. We do not know of the plan our Lord has set for each of us. We all need to conduct ourselves in a manor worthy of our Lord, staying true to our faith and seeking the truth.
We pray:
Dear God, help us see through the “noise” of our modern world, that we can find the truth hidden amongst the shouting and anger. The truth that can set us all free is that Jesus suffered the ultimate sacrifice so that we didn’t have to, He died on that cross for us. Thank you. Amen.
