You can hear the deep concern in Jesus’s voice as He cautions His followers about what the future will hold. Can you imagine how it felt hearing these dark words from Jesus’s mouth? I read them and I shudder!
Our world is a dangerous place, and Jesus knew we would have to fight against evil. His heavy warning was meant to set us up to be watchful. The events He lays out are frightening, but by telling us He has made us aware of the evil that lurks around the corner and He has shown us how to fight. Even in this passage of darkness, I see the Grace and Mercy of God. His warning is meant to inspire us to prepare, and to gather wisdom and understanding from the Bible. I love how in verse 11, He promises that when we need Him, the Spirit will speak through us. In the times when we are so overwhelmed or afraid that we can’t even speak, He promises to be there.
And so we prepare as instructed in Ephesians 6:13-18. We put on our Armor; we raise our Shield of Faith against the Liar who comes to deceive, and we pull out our Sword of the Spirit to protect against attacks. We know that Jesus did not leave us vulnerable, but gave us the tools we need to stand in the darkest hours.
We pray:
Thank you Father that you have given me what I need to live in the darkness of our world. Help me to hunger after you and your Word so that I will be ready to face any evil that tries to overcome me. Amen
